1 February 2016South Africa is one of 14 African countries to have received recognition for its fight against malaria during the 2016 African Leaders Malaria Alliance (Alma) meeting on 30 January as part of the 26th African Union Summit in Ethiopia. The 2016 Alma Awards for Excellence were given to:Botswana, Cape Verde, Eritrea, Namibia, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, South Africa, and Swaziland for achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for malaria;Rwanda, Senegal and Liberia for Performance in Malaria Control between 2011 and 2015;Mali, Guinea and Comoros for being the Most Improved in Malaria Control between 2011 and 2015.“These are impressive achievements,” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “They are a result of your vision of a malaria-free world.”These stats from the Alma shows where Africa is gaining ground in the fight against malaria. The green indicates a country on track, yellow indicates progress but more effort required while red shows countries that are not on track in the fight against malaria. (Image: Alma)South Africa’s progressIn South Africa, cases of malaria have decreased by 82%; and the malaria related death rate has dropped by 71% since the year 2000 to date. The decrease is attributed to a sound malaria vector control programme, in which the country has used dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane or DDT odourless insecticide for indoor residual spraying, coupled with other World Health Organization recommended interventions.“We are honoured to receive this 2016 Alma Award, which recognises the efforts that our programme in South Africa has made, not only in the past decade, but also investments we have made to fight malaria since the 1940s,” said President Jacob Zuma, who received the award.Collective effortSince 2000, malaria mortality rates in Africa had fallen by 66% overall and 71% among children under the age of five, said the alliance.“The African Leaders Malaria Alliance is a model for what we can do when we commit ourselves to a collective goal,” noted Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.“Our progress is undeniable. This is what it looks like when we work together – this is how we build a better future for Africa.”Challenge continues“Despite the remarkable achievements, we should not lose sight that malaria remains a disease of poverty and a major public health concern, particularly in Africa,” said Hailemariam Dessalegn, Ethiopia’s prime minister and the current chair of Alma. “We must therefore continue to invest in malaria interventions in order to reduce malaria cases and deaths.”According to the organisation, there were 188 million case of malaria in Africa in 2015. “An African child still dies every two minutes from the disease,” it said.To see how each country fared, click here to read the 2015 fourth quarter report.Source: SouthAfrica.info reporter

Christmas Day smartphone activations also prove the general theme of mobile in 2012: everything mobile exploded this year. We thought the 2011 growth in smartphones, tablets and apps was impressive. Well, 2012 made 2011 seem like ants crawling up a mountain. On Dec. 25, 2011, Flurry estimated 6.8 million iOS and Android activations. The 17.4 million activations in 2012 represents 2.5-times that of 2011. It is important to point out that Flurry is considerably larger this year than last, which could effect its projections. Nearly 260,000 apps currently use Flurry’s analytics system. The company estimates it can accurately gauge 90% of new device activations in the world. Once people had all those fancy new devices in their hands, they started to download apps. In droves. Flurry estimates that 328 million apps were downloaded on Dec. 25 (at least on its own platform), a 112% increase from baseline data from Dec. 1 to Dec. 20 (155 million app downloads per day). Flurry says that the 328 million downloads was a record day, “besting that of any previous day in history.” Christmas Day also saw a bounty of tablets under the tree. Dec. 25 saw 51% of all device activations go towards new slates. Flurry notes that the iPad, iPad Mini and Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch were the big winners this year. Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement It is interesting to note when people starting downloading apps on Dec. 25. If you household is anything like mine, then we wake up around 8 a.m. and start opening presents (oddly enough, no tablets or smartphones were given among my family this year, an extreme rarity). That means that we were nearly done with presents by 9:30 a.m., which means we would be playing with our gifts by about 10 a.m. Flurry charted app download volumes throughout Dec. 25 and found that downloads peaked around 10 a.m. on Dec. 25 and held steady at that highpoint for the next eleven hours or so, as the next chart illustrates. What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … These may seem like impressive numbers, but the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is the busiest of the year for app downloads. Smart app publishers got their apps (and marketing plans and in-app purchases/discounts) in to the iOS App Store and Google Play the week before Christmas. That is especially important for iOS, as Apple locks down the App Store for a week every Christmas, this year starting on Dec. 21. What apps did you download this holiday season? Let us know in the comments. Top image courtesy Shutterstock Tags:#analytics#Android#apps#iOS#mobile dan rowinski The holiday season is important to the mobile app economy, like it is for so many other industries. Yet, unlike retail businesses or the service economy that benefits in the weeks preceding Christmas Day, December 25th is perhaps the busiest day of the year for app developers. It makes sense. People get new smartphones and tablets as gifts, activate them and start downloading apps. 2012 proved no different. Mobile analytics company Flurry estimates that 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Dec. 25, 2012. For comparison, the period between Dec. 1 and Dec. 20 saw four million iOS and Android activations per day. Activations on Christmas represented a 332% increase from the first three weeks of December. Related Posts Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology
COLLEGE PARK, MD – OCTOBER 03: Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Michigan Wolverines (L) jogs off the fiedl with his brother Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh (R) following halftime of the Michigan and Maryland Terrapins game at Byrd Stadium on October 3, 2015 in College Park, Maryland. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)It’s a safe bet that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who also played for the Wolverines, isn’t a fan of Michigan State. But for at least one day in 1999, he intentionally wore Spartan green. This week, WXTZ-TV in Detroit unearthed footage of Harbaugh celebrating with the 1999 Michigan State basketball team during their national title run.Why does this exist? Harbaugh’s sister, Joani, is married to Tom Crean, who was then MSU’s assistant coach. Crean is now the head coach at Indiana.Harbaugh probably isn’t thrilled that this footage exists. But if his team beats MSU tomorrow, he probably won’t care.
MONTREAL – Bombardier Inc. expects to regain top spot among global business jet manufacturers in the coming years after delivering the fewest aircraft in more than a decade last year.“With the Global 7000 we are going to regain the leadership position in the marketplace,” CEO Alain Bellemare said Wednesday at a Citi conference in Miami. The Montreal-based company’s largest business jet is expected to be delivered later this year, contributing at full production US$3 billion to the US$10 billion in division revenues projected for 2020.Bombardier sold 140 business jets worth US$5.2 billion at list prices last year, according to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Deliveries were the lowest since they shipped 130 in 2004.In 2016, it shipped 163 aircraft valued at US$5.9 billion. That compared with Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., which shipped 120 planes valued at US$6.5 billion last year, similar to 2016.Overall, the business jet industry delivered 676 aircraft last year, up 1.3 per cent from 2016, GAMA reported Wednesday.Bombardier deliberately reduced its production rate in 2015 for business jets, causing the layoff of thousands of workers, as part of its turnaround plan that focused on improving margins.“We wouldn’t have expected the down cycle to have lasted so long and everyone was anticipating some recovery at some point in time,” added chief financial officer John Di Bert.He said the company “made the right call” by balancing supply with lower demand, something its competitors were slow to act upon.Signs of life in the corporate jet market — including a lower number of used planes for sale and increased usage — portend to better results to come, Di Bert said.“The second half of 2017 people started to get more confident but before that not so much so.”Di Bert said the company is being realistic about the recovery, but 2018 could be an important year and higher than projected sales are possible for 2020.“We’re going to watch this and going to favour getting strength back before we kind of think about big rate adjustments.”Asked about the future of Learjet, Bellemare said the small business jets aren’t “material” to its operations but he didn’t indicate any interest to sell the unit.Meanwhile, Bellemare acknowledged that Boeing’s trade complaint — which Bombardier ultimately won in a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling — created a “drag” on C Series sales.“The customers didn’t move away, they were just more prudent,” he said.“They wanted to know what the outcome would be but the momentum is good, the market is solid and we’re seeing it from the multiple discussions that we have with customers everywhere around the world.”Follow @RossMarowits on Twitter.Companies in this story: (TSX:BBD.B)

New Delhi: Congress leader Hardik Patel Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Gujarat High Court order rejecting his plea to stay his conviction in the 2015 Vispur rioting case. His petition is likely to be mentioned Tuesday for urgent hearing and his lawyers would seek stay of the March 29 order of the High Court which is coming in the way of his contesting the Lok Sabha election. Patel, 25, had started preparations to contest from Jamnagar on a Congress ticket after joining the party on March 12 and the last date for filing of nominations is April 4. Polling for 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat will be held on April 23. The Sessions Court at Visnagar in Mehsana district sentenced Patel to two years’ imprisonment last July for rioting and arson in Visnagar town in 2015 during the Patidar quota stir which he led. The high court in August 2018 suspended the sentence but not the conviction. Under the Election Law — Representation of the People Act and a related Supreme Court ruling — a convict facing a jail term of two years or more cannot stand for election unless the conviction is stayed. In the high court, the state government had submitted that there were 17 FIRs including two sedition complaints against Patel who is known for making inflammatory speeches. The high court had declined the contention of Patel’s lawyers that if the conviction was not stayed, it will cause “irreparable damage” as he intended to contest the Lok Sabha election. In the order, the high court noted that a conviction can be stayed only in rare and exceptional cases, and the case did not fall into that category.
