Cricketers Knocked Unconscious

first_imgARUNDEL, England — Two cricketers were knocked unconscious when they collided in an English county match on Sunday and were taken to a hospital in ambulances that had come onto the field.Surrey duo Moises Henriques and Rory Burns were injured while going for a catch during a Twenty20 match against Sussex in front of 8,500 spectators. The match was later abandoned.Henriques suffered a suspected broken jaw after he was struck by Burns’ knee. They regained consciousness at Arundel Castle Cricket Club in southern England before being taken to a hospital.“Both were unconscious after the collision,” Sussex physiotherapist John Marrale said. “Henriques was caught by Burns’ knee and Burns had lacerations on the top of his head and below his eye.“They were given oxygen and pain relief was administered by an intravenous drip before they went to hospital. Fortunately they were sitting up when they left the ground but it was a sickening incident.”The 28-year-old Henriques, a Portuguese-born Australia allrounder, signed for Surrey in April to play in the T20 Blast competition as an overseas player. Surrey was awaiting the results of an X-ray on Henriques’ jaw on Sunday night. The 24-year-old Burns, an opening batsman who was a graduate of London-based Surrey’s academy, was reported by the team to be chatting to staff at the hospital while waiting to see a specialist.Umpire Alex Wharf described the clash as a “horrific situation.”“Incidents like that are very rare but the first priority is always the welfare of the players,” Wharf said. “We consulted with the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and the captains and there was never any chance of the game continuing.”The collision occurred after Sussex batsman Steffan Piolet launched a huge top edge into the off side. Henriques and Burns were no more than 20 yards (meters) apart when they collided at full pace and fell face down. TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
