BAYONNE – The City of Bayonne and Bayonne Muslims have reached a settlement of $400,000 in a lawsuit stemming from the Zoning Board’s denial in March of 2017 of an application to convert on old warehouse on 109 East 24th Street into a community and prayer center, according to Mayor James Davis.Per the settlement, the Bayonne Zoning Board of Adjustments will vote on the application again at a special meeting, yet to be announced, within 30 days. The public will have a chance to comment on the settlement at the meeting. A public hearing and submission of a revised application are required by state law before the settlement agreement can be ratified. At the March meeting, the Zoning Board of Adjustments approved conditional use variances in curb width and buffer zone, but denied the group a bulk parking variance. Meanwhile, other places of worship in the city have been approved with similar variances.“This all goes back to the Constitution,” said Davis. “Every group should have a place to pray.”
