In Jamaica, on Monday a human rights and advocacy group called for more protection for children, and a junior government minister condemned as “cruel, inhumane and barbaric” the murder of a 14-year old secondary school student.The authorities said the mutilated body of 14-year-old Raven Wilson, a third form student of Ocho Rios High School in St Ann, was found in a plastic bag, meters from her home on Sunday, three days after she had been reported missing.Cold and heartless criminals “I. am seriously disturbed by the killing of yet another promising young girl, whose life was cut short by cold and heartless criminals. There is simply no justification for such cruelty against our children. The level of violence being meted out against them needs to stop, because it is robbing them of their right to life,” Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Floyd Green, said in a statement. He said that there seems to be a worrying trend in the recent spate of child murders with the perpetrators dismembering their victims.No stone will be left unturned “We want to send a clear message to these perpetrators that there will absolutely be no safe-haven for them. We continue to work assiduously with the police and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring they are brought to justice,” Green said, urging the community to come forward with any information that can assist the police with their investigations.40 children murdered in 2018The human rights group, Hear The Children’s Cry, is calling for the prosecution of persons involved in carrying out criminal acts on children. In a statement condemning the murder of Wilson, the group said “we have not even gone ten months of the year and nearly 40 children have already been murdered during 2018. That is double the usual gruesome annual statistic.The truth is, children in Jamaica are at terrible peril and are at the mercy of vicious criminals on a daily basis. They are not safe in their homes, they are not safe at school, they are in danger in their communities and on the roads, they are at horrible risk on public transportation, not to mention being vulnerable targets of pedophiles when they are online,” said the organization’s founder Betty Ann Blaine.Call for Emergency Child SummitShe repeated an earlier call for the government to convene an Emergency Child Summit to devise a plan to protect the nation’s children.Meanwhile, the ministry said a team of first responders from the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) will visit the Ocho Rios High School to conduct counselling sessions with affected children, followed by a home visit during the course of the week.Wilson’s death followed the killings of Shanoya Wray and Yetanya Francis, both 14, in Kingston last month.
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A second state of emergency (SOE) has been declared in Jamaica, this time in the capital city of Kingston.On Sunday during a press conference, Prime Minister Andrew Holness that an SOE is set for the Corporate Area police division of St Andrew South.Holness told journalists during a media briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister, that he advised the Governor-General Patrick Allen on the recommendation given to him by the heads of the security forces.“In St Andrew South the main cause of death is caused by gangs. Violence is at epidemic proportions in Jamaica … the main cause of death is gangs, dons and guns,” the Prime Minister said. Holness also added that 70 per cent of all murders being committed in Jamaica are gang-related.From January 1 to June 29, this year, there were 94 murders in St Andrew South, up from 79 for the corresponding period last year.Currently, there is a state of emergency in effect in the western parishes of Westmoreland, Hanover and St James.In January, a year-long state of public emergency expired in St James. The tri-state SOE was declared on April 30 of this year.In describing the overall crime situation nationally, especially relative to murders, Holness declared that “This is an epidemic and no one should tell that the country should be satisfied with it”.“The truth is that the level of crime is above the capacity of law enforcement to (effectively) respond. There have been 11,000 murders in the last eight years, and we do not have enough investigators,” said Holness.Many citizens have criticized the Holness administration’s decision to implement the State of Emergency, saying that move is just a cover for no real crime-fighting plan. But Holness has defended his decision, stating that “the Government is employing not just one strategy, but a raft of strategies that must complement each other”The measure will be in force initially for 14 days pending approval by the Houses of Parliament for an extension.

I definitely know that,” she said.The sprinter did not confirm whether she would completely retire from athletics, but hinted at the idea. “It doesn’t make me feel anything. I will miss the sport, but I will be OK. I don’t think it will be hard to retire. And how important is such a sizable jackpot pool to gain attention?Riccardo: It’s normal that when there are major brands like BetStars (aka PokerStars) there are also marketing campaigns of this level.In my opinion, only offering the big prizes is not enough, you also need a dedicated product which is well oriented to the preferences of the DFS players. This is something a major brand like PokerStars must also learn.SBC: DFS is known in North America and it’s growing in Europe, but Latin America is regarded as a potentially highly lucrative region. Thoughts on LatAM for Sportito?Riccardo: Most of the Latin American countries have a huge interest in online gambling and most of them are regulating their outdated gambling laws. Many of the big names in the industry are already eyeing the Latin American market. It is a great opportunity for Sportito to expand the business into this region.Whilst it is starting to grow there, I think it will be a slow and gradual growth process when compared with Europe and North America. That said, there is definitely a potential user-base for DFS in that region.SBC: How important is it for DFS to be recognised as a game of skill away from sports betting? Do you think the new Maltese licence will be replicated elsewhere?Riccardo: DFS and sports betting are often mistakenly seen as the same concept and there are many arguments as to why they differ. Many argue that it’s a form of gambling which involves an element of skill and others argue the opposite.It is important for DFS to be recognised as a game of skill in times when the legislation of some countries maintain restrictions against sports betting. Recognising DFS as sports betting is sometimes difficult for the operators to handle when implementation occurs in a new market.When there are positive effects with the Maltese licence, usually they are also adopted in other countries.
