Clips’ holes getting smaller

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe top 10 theme park moments of 2019 Taking stock of the Clippers’ roster, Cassell, Mobley, Corey Maggette, Elton Brand and Chris Kaman should comprise a solid starting lineup. The question then is depth, particularly at small forward, where Maggette will start. The Clippers have signed McCarty, who might backup Maggette. They also have signed James Singleton, who spent the past two years playing in Italy after playing at Murray State. Rodney White, who played with Denver and Golden State last season, is in training camp on a tryout contract. “We have a guy who averaged 22 points in the NBA starting at the position,” Dunleavy said. “As far as his backup, I feel about as good at where we are when we brought Bobby Simmons in. We’re solid there.” The Clippers have seven players who were on the squad last season. Brand, Maggette and Kaman are starting, and the other four Shaun Livingston, Chris Wilcox, Zeljko Rebraca and Quinton Ross figure to get playing time. Although the Clippers certainly do not appear vastly improved with their reserves, the coach doesn’t see it that way at least, not yet. When pressed, however, Dunleavy did offer an idea of what could help his team. “As far as a wish list is concerned, until somebody shows me, I’d like to have a big (forward or center) who can really stroke the ball from the 3-point line,” he said. “Walter (McCarty) may be able to give us that. To play against certain teams in the West that have that as a big strength, we don’t have that yet.” SANTA BARBARA — Mike Dunleavy practically sounds as if he experienced Christmas in August, when the Clippers signed Cuttino Mobley and traded for Sam Cassell. The way the coach sees it, the Clippers don’t have many holes in their starting lineup and they’re relatively deep with their reserves. Making the playoffs is a possibility that is no longer farfetched. center_img “I haven’t lost any games yet,” Dunleavy said. “When I lose that first game, I’ll be wishing for a Christmas list.” CLIPPERS NOTES: By the looks of the media, which included 15 Japanese journalists when training camp opened, the Clippers may have another superstar in Yuta Tabuse, the first native of Japan to make the NBA, playing in four games with Phoenix last season. After being released by Phoenix, he played 14 games with the Long Beach Jam of the ABA. He is trying to hook up with the Clippers, even though the team has three point guards with Cassell, Livingston and Daniel Ewing. “He’s got to be able to show that he can counteract his (5-9) size with his speed and quickness, make plays, not turn the ball over and make open shots,” Dunleavy said. “And then, defensively, he has to use his speed and quickness to harass guys, make them use the clock, as opposed to getting in a position where the post him up.” … Maggette is expected to make his training camp debut today, after spending the beginning of camp in Chicago because of a family emergency. — Joe Stevens can be reached at joe.stevens@presstelegram.comor (562) 499-1338. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
